Salmon oil vs. linseed oil

Both salmon oil and linseed oil are rich in essential fatty acids. These are fatty acids that the body cannot produce itself but needs to function normally. The main difference between salmon oil and linseed oil lies in the types of omega-3 fatty acids. Linseed oil is especially rich in one type of omega-3 fatty acid (ALA), while salmon oil is rich in EPA and DHA in addition to ALA.

This ALA is most present in vegetable oil, while EPA and DHA are mainly found in animal oil. ALA fatty acids must first be converted by the horse into EPA and DHA to be used in the body. However, this process is quite inefficient, resulting in only a 5-10% conversion. The animal-based EPA and DHA omega-3 fatty acids can be used directly by the horse, making the omega-3 fatty acids provided through salmon oil much more efficiently utilized.

Feeding advice
Horse:
High: 60 ml per animal per day.
Maintenance: 30 ml per animal per day.

Pony:
High: 40 ml per animal per day.
Maintenance: 20 ml per animal per day.
